Exotic cat

Exotic shorthair is a breed of cat developed to be a short-haired version of the Persian. They usually appeal to people who like the personality of a Persian, but don’t want to deal with the grooming and care required of a long-hair cat. The ease of maintaining the shorthair cat’s coat is typically the major selling point for consumers. Exotic Shorthair cats are similar to the Persian cat in a few ways, including: temperament and conformation (except for the short dense coat); additionally the Shorthair breed has inherited similar health problems associated with the Persian.

The exotic shorthair has a compact (rounded) body type and a short thick neck. It also has large round eyes, a short snubby nose, and small ears. The shorthair’s body is medium in size with it’s body frame being close to the ground; their average weight of is approximately 5-6 kilograms. The coat of the shorthair is slightly longer than other breeds of short-haired cats. It’s fur is fluffy and dense, and the Persian color of the fur is distinct in this breed.

The exotic shorthair breed typically has a gentle and calming personality type (similar to the Persian), but is usually livelier and more playful; also, the Exotic Shorthair is typically friendly to other breeds of cats and dogs. The breed of cat is extremely affectionate and loyal to its owner, and doesn’t like being left alone; for these reasons the Exotic Shorthair makes a great house cat due to the need for affection and loyalty.

As far as grooming, the breed is fairly easy to tame and take care of. The cat itself is able to keep its fur clean with little assistance from the owner. An owner should comb or brush the fur weekly to remove loose fur and reduce shedding. Other than this, little, if any maintenance and care is required by owners.

As far as health risks, the Exotic Shorthair (like the Persian) has a high risk of contracting PKD, a disease which causes kidney failure. As a preventive measure, owners should have an annual DNA screening performed to reduce the chance of this disease.

In general, the Shorthair is a desireable breed due to its exotic features. The breed is friendly, easy to care for, and a great house pet. For owners looking for a companion pet, requiring little care and maintenance, the Shorthair would be a great choice.
